MEMBER RESOURCES

Benefits of Membership

U.S. government figures indicate union workers earn, on average, 30% more in wages and benefits than non-union workers.  By joining the Union, you have the right to real collective bargaining and the protection of a legally binding contract, negotiated and approved by you and your co-workers.  When you are in a union, you can have your Union Representative present if you are called in for disciplinary reasons by management.  Your union contract gives you the protection of a grievance procedure to make sure you are not unfairly disciplined.  Non-union workers are left to accept whatever working conditions management places upon them with no recourse or input.

Membership Desk

For questions about dues payments or membership status, contact the Membership Records Department, or call the Union Office and dial Extension #116.  If you leave your job for any reason, immediately contact the Union Office for a withdrawal card, allowing you to reinstate your membership without paying an initiation fee.

Grievances

A basic principle in grievance processing is to follow the grievance procedure in your contract.  Local 2008 takes grievances very seriously; therefore, it is important that you file grievances in a timely manner and in the proper procedure.  Contracts with Local 2008 vary considerably from company to company, so it is important you know this section of your contract.  If you do not have a copy of your contract, call your Union Representative and a copy will be provided.  Due to the timeliness issue, grievances cannot be accepted via e-mail – you must contact your Steward or Union Representative by phone or in person.

Scholarships

Our International Union offers four-year college scholarships to members and dependents of members.  You may review the scholarship rules and other information online at www.ufcw.org/scholarhip.  Our Region offers scholarships as well.  Contact the Union Office or your Union Representative for details.

Union Privilege Program

The AFL-CIO sponsored program for union members only can save you money on mortgage loans, Union Plus Credit Cards, legal services, and more.  Click here to find out more about these programs.
