Active Ballot Club

þ   You Can Make A Difference

History has taught us that political involvement is crucial to a strong and effective Labor Union.  Unions must participate in the political process to preserve and establish safeguards, which protect our members' rights at the bargaining table and safety on the job.  All workers in this country enjoy the benefits of a lifestyle won primarily by labor's hard fought and won battles in the halls of Congress.

United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and Local 2008 are determined to protect these hard won benefits, just as we do at the bargaining table.  Through membership in the Active Ballot Club, every UFCW member can have a part and a strong voice in crucial matters that affect your work place beyond the protection of the collective bargaining agreement.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

Victories take more than dedication – they require the know-how and the means to be successful. By signing on at your work place for the 25¢ per week ABC contribution, you too can help elect representatives and promote issues which serve the interests of our members and all working people.  It is necessary to have a strong legislative program within our Union to counter the staggering amounts of money raised by wealthy individuals and corporate America, whose only agenda is to weaken the voice of the worker.  We welcome your comments, as well as your participation in the legislative process.

Questions About Active Ballot Club

1.     Why does the Union need a political voice?
Such organizations as the Active Ballot Club protect and promote the interests of our members by supporting legislation beneficial to all American workers and by opposing legislation harmful to union members and their families.

2.     Can ABC contributions be more than 25¢ per week?
Yes!  Members can give any amount they wish.  Some members, including your Local Union staff, contribute a minimum of $300 per year.

3.     Does the ABC tell members who they should vote for?
No!  The ABC makes recommendations based on a number of factors, including a candidate's past voting record and interviews to see where candidates stand on important issues.  Voters make up their own minds.

4.     Are all union-endorsed candidates Democrats?
No!  The ABC is non-partisan.  Endorsements are made based on the candidate's commitment to the programs of the working men and women of America.

5.     How can I help the Union recruit ABC members?
Each year in December, the Local Union has a raffle for members of the ABC who contribute $1 or more during the year.  Members can win gift certificates ranging from $25 to $1,000.  Members can also win trips through the UFCW Region office.  Tell your friends and co-workers about the Active Ballot Club so they can become members and also win prizes.
